JUPEB

Understanding JUPEB

JUPEB is a National Examination body saddled with the responsibility of conducting examinations for students, who have undergone approved subject combinations and are seeking Direct Entry admissions into Nigerian and partnering foreign tertiary institutions. It is a new Advanced Level examination body recently established and coordinated by the University of Lagos. Basically, the programme is similar to the Interim Joint matriculation Board (JUPEB) coordinated by Ahmadu Bello University and recognized by many universities in Northern Nigeria. JUPEB is, as at now, recognized by Federal universities in Southern Nigeria such as University of Lagos (Unilag), University of Nigeria Nsukka, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife (OAU), Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), University of Ilorin, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), University of Port Harcourt, University of Calabar, and many more.

Meanwhile, the affiliated institutions have set up programmes to train candidates on the syllabus of the Board in subjects relevant to course intended to study. For example, Physics/Chemistry/Biology for medical courses, physics/chemistry/mathematics for engineering courses, etc. The charges for the programme vary from institution to institution. The actual charges for the programme can be obtained at the website of the institution or through an inquiry at the institution.

The Programme leads to the award of the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) Certificate which enables candidates to gain Direct Entry Admission into 200 level of the degrees offered by the University of Lagos and other JUPEB-affiliated Universities in Nigeria and universities abroad. The JUPEB Certificate is equivalent to the Advance Level GCE or the Old Higher School Certificate (HSC) or JUPEB.

Programme Objectives

  • - To source superior students for the University's degree programmes and reduce the high rate of dropouts from the University.
  • - To ensure adequate preparation of eligible secondary school graduates for University academic scheme.
  • - To enhance analytical and independent learning abilities and promote the intellectual development as well as oral and written skills of students.

JUPEB Eligibility

To be eligible to take examinations leading to the award of JUPEB's Direct Entry Certificates, the candidate must have been exposed to an intensive scheme of academic work relevant to his/her proposed university course.

- Each candidate admitted into the programme will be exposed to an intensive academic work in three subject combinations relevant to their desired field of study.

- The subjects are broken into four courses labeled 001, 002, 003 and 004 with each candidate taking six courses per semester making a total of twelve courses at the end of the programme. In addition, candidates will also take at least two general studies courses (one per semester). Each course will be examined at the end of each semester but the results in all the courses taken will be merged at the end of the second semester to obtain a letter grade in each subject (i.e. A, B, C, D, E and F).

- The general studies to be chosen by each candidate will be based on general courses relevant to the field of study.

- For admission into the University of Lagos and other JUPEB affiliate institutions, each candidate, in addition to passing the prescribed JUPEB examination for issuing the Direct Entry Certificates, must satisfy all admission requirements prescribed by departments and faculties of choice.

Structure of JUPEB Programme

- Candidates shall offer at least three main subjects at A' level.

- The overall mark in each subject shall be expressed as a percentage and may include an element in respect of Continuous Assessment (CA).

- For every A' Level subject registered, each candidate must have a C.A grade which carries 20% of the total scores.

- All science subjects in JUPEB Examination, except A' Level Mathematics, have one practical paper each, which carries substantial percentage of the total scores.

- All social science subjects have two papers only, except for Economics, which has objective questions as Paper III.

- There are three papers to Arts subjects (Literature in English and CRS).

- The conversion of JUPEB grades are; A - 70% and above, B - 60-69%, C - 50-59%, D - 45-49%, E - 40-44%, F - below 40%.

Determination of Grades

- Candidates' grades and points in the final examination are calculated thus: A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1, F = 0. (A point is added to a candidate whose result is devoid of an F grade)

- For example, a student who gets a C grade in all three subjects entered for has a point calculated thus; CCC= 3 + 3 + 3 + 1 = 10pts

- Maximum point = AAA in your three subject courses = 15+ 1 = 16pts. Please confirm this in the UME/DE brochure.

Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q)

You have a question? Someone else might have had the exact same one. Let's find out!

JUPEB is a federal government program that is being supervised by University of lagos. It is an advanced level programme that offers admission into 200L without UTME or PUTME via Direct Entry. It is accepted by 75% of all Nigerian Universities and quoted on JAMB brochure.

The Programme is certified by the Nigeria University Commission (NUC). See page 4 of the JAMB brochure, item 2.2(2) to confirm JUPEB as a requirement for university admission via Direct Entry. Also see Direct entry for universities.

Very few students know about the JUPEB programme as an alternative means of securing admission. Every year less than 20,000 students registered for the JUPEB programme as against 1.5 million students of JAMB. Thus the possibility of gaining admission via JUPEB is very high.

Candidates seeking admission into the JUPEB programme must possess the following;

> 5 credit passes in any of WASSCE, NECO, NABTEB or IGCSE
> Birth certificate or Declaration of Age
> 8 passport photograph of red background
> Attestation letter from Clergy, Senior Civil Servant, Legal Practitioner, Police Officer, etc

The JUPEB is a Nine (9) months intensive academic programme with a one month period of Examination, usually held in June of every year.

The JUPEB result is issued to its candidates two (2) months after the final Examination. On receipt of the Result, candidates are to purchase the Direct Entry (DE) form from any JAMB office (which is usually on sale between April and August), fill the form and submit same to the JAMB office. JAMB personnel’s scrutinizes the submitted form and forward the names of qualified candidates to their respective choice of universities for admission into 200L via Direct entry. It is like the Higher School certificate of the 1970s.
N/B: JUPEB result is an equivalent of the National Diploma certificate of any Polytechnic

No, the JUPEB Programme is very different from the University Pre-degree or Remedial Programme. The table below summarizes the differences.

JUPEB can be used for admission into all courses offered by Nigerian Universities

The JUPEB programme is run at our study centre location within your proximity.

PLEASE NOTE, for information on studying fees kindly refer to our Programme fees N/B: Fees are payable in instalments.

Students of the JUPEB programme offer just three (3) subjects that are relevant to their proposed courses of study in the University. Example: A student of medicine offers just Biology, Chemistry and Physics; A student of Law; C.R.S, Government and Literature in English.

The JUPEB programme is not difficult to pass if well taught. However it requires a great deal of concentration, hardwork and dedication on the part of the student.
